In July, the DC Social Innovation Project hosted social innovators who seek to give local residents technological and digital skills in order to expand their employment prospects. With a panel dedicated to the intersection of technology and economic opportunity Byte Back, General Assembly, and The Street Sense Digital Marketing Certificate Program discussed not only their programs that provide services ranging from basic to advanced computer and development courses to content creation and digital marketing instruction, but also the challenges facing those organizations with similar missions and the economic needs of those they seek to serve. Citing barriers ranging from a lack of access to internet and the need simply for space for volunteers and program participants to meet, there was a consensus that while there was an enormous amount of potential for technology training to change the economic landscape for many communities in DC, better collaboration amongst stakeholders was needed.

Stay tuned to The Notepad for in-depth reflections on what we learned from the panel!
